A new life begins in the middle of an old life. Quickly and often beautifully. Without worrying to prepare for it, or needless anticipation. Suddenly, your shifts, your life changes and you are ready. You just didn’t know it.

That’s what’s happened to me. That’s where I’ve been. That’s why this post is my first typing venture in nearly a month. Yes, my novel may stall, yes my backyard may need tending, my pool may turn green and my golf swing degrade for lack of practice. All because my new life has started.

It’s called Grandparenthood. A little ungainly of a term, I admit, but a completely legit entry in any online dictionary. Nettie and I have new names, too…Noni and Popi…and our little Sydney has center stage these days.

Popi with Sydney

She’s the new life that has changed my life and the life of my family. Blessesdly. What a wonderous way to greet the Holiday Season and ring in the new year.

I could wax on philisophically here, but those of you who are already grandparents could easily write the sentences and paragraphs for me. Those of you who are brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, in-laws and friends can recall or create your own precious memories without any help from me.

Besides, I’m too busy right now to contemplate too deeply. I’ve got a grandchild to fill in the dream-space inside my head.

So let me just wish you all a beautific celebration of the riches that family and tradition offer and hope you find yourselves in the cradle of comfort this year.
