Car WashIs there anything more useless than washing your car? Hard to imagine right off the top of my head. And what are we washing it for? Oh yeah, for it to be shiny and pretty…but for whom? And for how long?

It gets dirty again almost instantly…even as you’re drying the rear of the car, dust has already settled over the front. If you have disc brakes (and who doesn’t these days), you can’t back out of the driveway without disc dust shadowing the fancy chrome wheels you so earnestly polished.

This useless process reminds me of T.S. Eliot’s coffee spoons. Each morning another cup of coffee, another spoonful of sugar. And then another. And another…and another.line of spoons..

As Eliot says, “I have measured out my life with coffee spoons.”

Depressing, huh?

Well, I’m going to see Love this week in Las Vegas. For those of you who may not know what Love is, I’ll tell you. It’s a Cirque du Soleil interpretation of the Beatles, their influence and their era.

For those of you who may never have heard of the Beatles…they were a British rock quartet that came out of Liverpool, England in the Age of Aquarius. I guess some would say they created the Age itself and changed the world as we knew it. (We all clear on what the Age of Aquarius was? Snarky, ain’t I?)

beatles 2The Beatles broke up in 1970, 43 years ago and two of the four Beatles have been dead for years and years…way too many years. A lifetime in fact with endless rows of coffee spoons, and midnight moons, and splendid Junes, and countless honeymoons…

So I guess someone out there could ask the question: Is there anything more useless than going to see an interpretation of an old rock group that hasn’t even recorded a song for almost half a century?

My answer to that person would be: Try washing a car.

Or eating a meal, only to get hungry again.

Or sleeping, only to get tired again.

Or breathing…one breath in, only to blow it out again.

Or writing a blog on Monday, only to have to write a new one next week. Hey, wait a minute!

It’s simple…some things we do because we need to.

And that’s all I have to say about that.

See you next Monday with a new post…I’ll tell ya how I liked Love.
